Dear all,

please can you advise - I have set up a web site with front page 2000 using an NT server (virtual hosting)

how can i make my site require users to log in with user name and password ? I am aware of most of the requirements but have a simple problem - the Tools - Security option is greyed out !!

how should i manage registered users ?

I hope you can help

Andrew

You need to open the web itself to use the security (it will be grayed out if you're working on the Web site from files on your computer). As for handling the users, you might have a public page where everyone can go on and see some information. Then, under that web, create the subweb that requires the password protection. You can then put some content information on the public access page about your "members only" section and who to contact to get the password.

many thanks for your help. i hope you wont mind just a little bit more help.

when i open my web from mycomputer web folders, i can see the folders i wish to make available to registered users, but how do i actually set it ? properties has no options so i am unable to 'create the subweb that requires the password protection' as you suggest

thanks again

andy

To create the subweb, right click on the folder to bring up the shortcut menu. Choose Convert to Subweb.

For a new one, open the Folders display. Make sure you're click on the place where you actually want the folder inserted. Select File>New>Web.

If you're using shared borders, it will blank the borders inside the subweb when you do this, so you'll need to recreate them. However, this is a handy thing to know about if you want to create different shared borders within your Web site.
