I have created a number of scripts over the last few months that help me monitor the logs, do trouble shooting, and help me ensure that the system is up an running.
I fear to post them all here. If you have specific questions, I can help you to better learn your system and what you really need. Just handing you my scripts won't solve all your problems. Not only that, but each area needs to be addressed separately. You need to decide what is most important for you at this time, and we can work from there.
I want to help, but learning takes time (for both of us) Einstein47 (Love is like PI - natural, irrational, endless, and very important.)

thanks for your response...but you see maybe I didn't express myself properly..I'm not a student but someone who is an experienced programmer wanting to understand unix in-depth. I already know the basic commands etc, but I was wondering if you needed to write shell scripts to do all of the above, including automated processes.
moreso, I would like to know sites where I can get help with sample scripts
thanks
