Whenever I try to install Windows 98 on a laptop it reboots and gives the following message : Windows Protection Error Please restart windows. After I restart windows it then gives me another windows protection error and it refers to the file c:\windows\system\vmm32.vxd and no matter what I do Windows will not come up. The only way I can get it to come up is in safe mode. Can anyone please help? Any and all help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Two things come to mind.
One, the system (BIOS setup) is sharing a resource, either IRQ and/or physical memory addressing. Remove any PC cards, and try again.
Second, the RAM has a problem, and cannot be logically adressed during setup, thus the error.
I would boot to safe mode, remove all "ghost" devices (more than one of the same device/category), all com ports, modems, sound cards (especially the MPU-401 emmulator, which is only needed for DOS sound), and everything in "Other Devices".
A restart should sort out the problem during the multiple reinstalls of ports etc. If not, peruse the BIOS setup carefully, and look for power settings. Turn them ALL off in BIOS, and let windows handle it.
