I am trying to add a static ip address to my machines.I have a lynksis router along with a westell wirespeed modem.I am relatively new at this. I have an ideal but need a little help. Could someone tell me from top to bottom the proper sequence that I need to perform. I need simple illustrations to this problem. I do have the gateway number static ip and subnet mask. Thanks to anyone who will help.

Do you mean an internal static IP on your computer (not something related to a static internet IP)? For step by step directions, you need to let us know what operating sytem you're using.

The default settings for a Linksys router would permit static IPs in the following ranges:

192.168.1.2 -- 192.168.1.99
192.168.1.150 -- 192.168.1.253

So pick one not yet assigned, say 192.168.1.10

To make the entry:

right click your network tray icon, and open network connections. right click your LAN connection, and select properties.

Highlight TCP/IP and click Properties. The first choice is a radio button selection; currently you have 'Obtain an IP address automaticly' selected. Choose the second choice to specify an IP address. In the box that appears type 192.168.1.10, use 255.255.255.0 as the Subnet Mask, and type 192.168.1.1 as the Gateway address.

Under the lower panel, enter 192.168.1.1 as the DNS server.
Hit OK. You are done.

Reboot your computer and you know have a static IP address.

See for pictures:

Sorry bcastner, but I've got to ask.... How do you know there's a network tray icon?

I don't, but the default would be DHCP and in all likeliehood if connected to the router it would pull an IP.

I agreee. I was just trying to figure out if I was missing something.

Steve

In the absence of a tray icon, use Device Manager and use the property sheet of the network adapter.
