Hello all. I have a new Sun workstation running Solaris 8. I installed an ATM interface and had the network folks hook it up. They gave me all the info that I needed, so I began to configure. I am using SUNWatm 5.0 so I was configuring with atmadmin. Comparing this system to one that is connected, alive, and well...Everything looks the same. But for some reason, I cant get out. I called Sun, and they told me to ping the IP that I assigned. I did that and it said "I" was alive, so he tells me the ATM card is configured correctly. But I can't ping anything else on the network. Sun guy tells me that its a problem with the switch, not the config. But for some reason I am having a rough time believing him. Here is the ever scrolling alarm in /var/adm/messages:

fall laner: [ID 591094 kern.notice] NOTICE: lane0: will attempt to start ELAN in 38 sec

fall atmsnmpd: [ID 702911 daemon.warning] Can not obtain local IP address -- is "fall" in "/etc/hosts"?

# Yes it is

fall laner: [ID 696921 kern.warning] WARNING: laner config request failed for lane0 (status= Insufficient Info)

Can anyone help?

Thanks,
J

The switch has to be configured for ATM.
Please post atmconfig and laneconfig files for more info.

atmconfig:

#Signalling Version for each interface
ba0 3.1 - - -
#Classical IP values for each interface

#Lan Emulation values for each interface
ba0 - - 0 hostname
#Framing Interface values for each interface
ba0 SONET - - -

laneconfig:

#Basic Entries for each lane interface
lane0 - $myaddress - 1
lane0 my_elan_name - - n
#ILMI dis entries
#Manual Entries (Not touched by atmadmin)

Hope this helps. Im thinking it's my network folks giving me some faulty information...but I'm too ignorant with ATM to know!
Thanks for the quick response and help.

Your atmconfig files and laneconfig files are good.

Make sure your hostname is defined in /etc/hosts.

I also believe your network guys have some work to do on the switch. Your Sun box seems fine.

One thing I have noted with ATM on Sun. Everytime I change something in the config, I have to reboot the server because /etc/init.d/sunatm stop/start does not do the job properly.

Hey thanks for your help. It turns out to be either of these two things: (a) my network people are bad because I called them this morning and told them about the problem and usually if they fix it, they won't tell me about it. Or (b) I kept seeing this eri0 messages after boot and I didn't like it, so I removed it in /dev,then did a boot -r. Don't know if that had anything to do with it or not. But hey, it works...it's just that sometimes it's REALLY nice to know why it works. Thanks for all your help (especially the reboot after the changes because I was running sunatm stop/start!).
