I have 2 20 GB Quantum Hard Drive and another Maxtor Hard Drive. While playing around I opened my machine few weeks back .
I disconnected the Quantum drive but forget to disconnect the power and while the system was running, somehow the Quantum drive slipped from it's location and its tracks touched the metal and I smelled some smoke. I disconneted the PC. I think some IC or capacitor/resistor has burned on the hard drive.
I am not able to detect this hard drive now. Is it possible to rescue the data or can I replace any of the parts on the hard drive board.
Thanks for your help.

The interface board on a hard drive probably can be replaced by one from another same exact model drive. Observe strict Anti-Static procedures.

If the data on the drive is important to warrant the cost, you can send it to a place like for evaluation and they will notify you as to what can be done. A standard diagnostic on one I had checked was $100 and the priority was $150. Unfortunately for my client the drive had physical damage to the disks and nothing could be retrieved. Ontrack opens the case only in a "clean room" to prevent contamination.
