This is pretty much a repost with added things I have tried since the first posting but didn't help.

We have upgraded (clean installs) some computers to XP Pro (SP1) connecting to a 4.0 domain (all SP 6a). Everything works well but slow browsing to network shares on servers and workstations -- sometimes takes up to 30 seconds. This only occurs when first connecting to a share. Then it works well until the machine is restarted or isn't used for awhile. Also, connecting by UNC rather than drive mapping is faster. We are using Wingate for DNS (not a true DNS server) and WINS for name resolution. We will be upgrading the servers to 2000 shortly but cannot at this time. All TCP/IP tools I have tried work well with no errors and name resolutions works fine. The WINS database looks good. Adding a second DNS server is difficult because Wingate doesn't work well with another one. I am not that familar with Wingate -- just my understanding. Some of the things I have tried are:

Disable net crawler (no affect)

Changed the MTU from 1500 to 1450 (no affect)

Put IP and hostnames in the host file (helped some)

Installed Netbeui (no affect)

Disable virus software

Checked switches

Some registry hacks

Used MS 315237 - High Rate of Collisions on 100 MB Network (no affect)

Installed newest NIC driver (no affect)

Used MS 318266 - Disable Digitally encrypt or Sign Secure Channel data (no affect)

Used MS 811492 - It may take 35 seconds to delete files with Windows XP SP1 (helped with the deleting problem but not with browsing)

Used MS 310353 - Clean Boot (no affect)

Ran Netdaig (showed no problems)

Net View (no problems)

Nbtstat (show no problems)

Enable Netbios over TCP/IP (no affect)

Turned off QoS (no affect)

Checked cables (no problems)

Event Viewer shows no related errors

Used netsh int ip reset to reset IP stack (no affect)

Nslookup on the Wingate - shows some errors. (again not that fimilar with Wingate)

We are using Cisco switches which may be the problem but don't think so. All workstations have identical hardware (HP Vectra - same model). Finally, all workstations running NT 4 or Win 2000 have no problems whatsoever.

Please help!

Hi waldoss,

Try eliminating all your mapped drives. Start adding them back in one-by-one. You'll see what I mean. Also, if you have files mapped to root of drive, rather then particular folders) you'll also notice a big difference in browse/speed over your network.

Just a couple suggestions. Looks like you've tried pretty much everything else.

Good Luck.

Try disabling the Web Client service on the XP machines. I had similar problems and Microsoft advised this and the 811492 hotfix which you've already tried.

We are having the same issue, did any of these threads work for you? If I find the answer I will let you know asap,

This helped for me:

1. If you are using WinZip, disassociate it from .zip or any other files in Tools, Folder Options, File Types; or by running the program and unchecking its file associations. It replaced it for associated file duty with WinRar and the speed in viewing of Folders increased dramaticly.

2. Similarly, is you have a lot of .tiff, .png, .gif or .jpg files in these folders take some speedy little viewer (.e.g. InfranView) rather than have Photoshop, or something fancy hold the file association for these types of files.

This all points to DNS configuration, As XP is so heavily reliant on DNS check the configurations of your DNS servers and make sure they are correct

Also check your TCP/IP setting's on each XP machine if using DHCP you should pick up automatically, however if manual settings make sure they are correct.

Microsoft just came out with a hot fix for this dated 04/29/2003 Q811492 - this works!!!!!!

Raye,
Can't seem to find the hotfix anywhere on Microsoft. Any Links? I'm having the exact same problem and it's driving me crazy!
Thanks,
Scuzz

wakloss,

Looks like you have tried everything but the kitchen sink. To some extent the problem is understandable as Windows resolves the netbios addressing and gathers information about the share. If you have not done this registry change to the client machines it will make a big difference:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Explorer/RemoteComputer/NameSpace directory. Browse through the contents and find a key called {D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF}. Delete this nasty little key. As with all registry changes it will require a reboot for the changes to take affect.

Scuzz,
You will have to contact Microsoft for this Hot Fix. MS does not release hot fixes because they are not tested and you are on your own with support. The call is free and there is no cost for the Fix. They will give you the location and password to access this hot fix.

FYI - This will be included in SP2
Hope this helps.

Hello:
Try turning off the simple file sharing in folder options...
Icon58

All,
For my problem, disabling the WebClient service did the trick. icon58, I'll try to re-enable the WebClient service and then try to turn off the simple file sharing, and post the results.

For everyone's information and hopefully this might help others, here was my issue in detail:

XP Pro SP 1
with mapped drives to local Windows NT 4 Servers and Domain and mapped drives to remote Windows NT 4 Servers and Domain(different than local) via WAN(T1). I have mapped drives via net use in login script. Also tried reconnected mapped drives with same result.
After a reboot, Open "My Computer" and attempt to open share on remote Windows NT 4 Servers resulted in consistant 20 second delays in displaying folders. Open a local share on local Windows NT 4 Servers and they open instantly. Once the remote shares are opened, subsequent opens worked fine with no delay (until it decided to do it again randomly). One other thing that I did find is that after reboot, if you opened any application and used the applications browse utility you can open the remote shares and folders instantly without delay.

And by the way, since disabling WebClient Service has resolved the issue, does anyone know what the WebClient Service really does?

Thanks,
Scuzz

icon58,
Tried enabling WebClient Service which caused issue again and then rebooted. Then tried turning off the simple file sharing and even tried rebooting with simple file sharing turned off and the issue was still there.

The only thing I've seen elsewhere that was omitted in this thread was the "Browse Master" issue. This is found in the "File and Print Sharing" properties on Win9X and ME workstations and should be "disabled" on ALL machines except the server.

Still didn't help me. I've got folders on my server that XP take well over a minute to access when the 98SE and ME stations do it in two seconds.

Granpalew,

Make sure at a mimumum that the recommendations about DNS from this thread are followed: thread779-540080
