I have to trace a lot of Medical illustrations. Tracing outline is no problem. But when it comes to Stapling (irregular sized dots to give depth and shade to illustrations). It is really very tedious to do it. Is there some facility in illustrator to create dotted line. Starting from bigger dot (1.5 pt) regularly decreasing to (.6 pt) dots. Is there some third party utilities.

If somebody knows, please help.

I think it is Stippling not Stapling. (Spelling mistake)

You could probably use the gradient tool with a very low line screen or use the blend tool to blend the biggest dot with the smallest. Also remember you can make your own brushes. Try making one of a sparse cluster of dots. Just click more times in the areas you where you want more build up. BEHOLD! As Steve Jobs introduces us the latest in desk-lamp technology!

Thanks for the response Jaquan.

I had tried it with blend option (Blending a circle of 1.5 pt dia. with smaller circle of .6 pt dia.) The problem is that the blended steps are not circular, instead they are elliptical or compressed. ???? And I need perfectly circular steps. I don't know why. Is it due to very small sized circles. I am using Adobe Illustrator 8.0 for Mac.

U have some idea, why is it so?

thanks

make a bunch of small dots in a cluster, select em all, drag em to your brushes palette, select pattern brush. now just use that brush to 'color' in the areas you want

thanks for the respone again, but my problem is still unsolved.

I am still not able to blend successfully a 1.5 pt dia circle with a .6 pt dia circle.

Is it possible in freehand?

Draw your first line. Using dashed line box choose with say .5pt 1pt .5pt 1pt with the .6 and then one for the 1.5 then simply blend between the two
