i have a maxtor 7,200rpm hd which is about 6 months old...it has run fine all this time then my motherboard broke {epox 8kha+}so i got a new mb asus a7v266-e connected it up and worked fine .
then after 4 days of low use iwent on the comp and my system FROZE UP {windows xp pro}which never happens often for me so i reset and when it booted back upit said no o/s was present so i used some boot programs and got back nothing.so i reinstalled windows and fixed boot sector and comp was running again AND SOD ME IF WITHIN 4 DAYS THE SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN....this time it said i had crossed over clusters ,and the critical one was one or more lost clusters are present i tried fdisk and yet again no luck.
i went back to scratch for a third time and yes you guessed it......a few days crashed this time a corrupted win32 file, fixed but really need some help on this before happens again,i have norton antivirus and internet security and utilites and ive tried changing just about everything i could on cmos..whats the prob hd/mb?help would be very appreciated.

Go to Maxtor's site and download their diagnostic. Some things may be happening, the drive may be getting too warm, the power supply may not be providing enough juice to the system, or the drive may be failing. The diagnostic will give an error code to use in requesting warranty coverage. WinXP does seem to need more power and case temps have been rising, additional cooling fans are good things. I put in a 400 Watt power supply, another case fan, and doubled the fans on the AMD Athlon 700MHz module.

The diagnostic.program Berton is referring to is PowerMax and it is a good lowlevil format tool with easy to understand directions and easy walk through ! Even I had no problem using it ! Hope This Helps Solve Your Problem

yes ive used it before and the hd passes all tests,it done it again the other day so brought new hd and i will now see if problems return.....i have also now removed my sound card cos my comp crashed the last time while playing UT but just before it did the sound went all crackly so i was pondering on the idea that might be conflicting some where, this is really starting to take its toll om me keep on reinstalling and losing big downloads, shite i just want me comp back, lol, cheers for help and please offer more cos its food for thought.

Here is some food for thought . When I download a file I always save it to a folder on the desktop then after I install the program to be sure the download is good I burn the download to a CD-RW ,I have one disk I use just for downloads and I can keep adding to it untill the disk is full ,I have all the Micro soft updates and other programs om it so when I do a complete install I only Have one disk to use and my PC is back to normal in a matter of min. instaed of hrs. Hope This Helps Solve Your Problem
