Please help - Desktop shortcut 1

Ok i have the most stupit question in the book, how the heck do you make a desktop shortcut, or i should say button, every time I click and drag to make a shortcut it only moves what I want over... I don't need it moved I need a shortcut, Please Help...
 
Or you can make an alias using command + m and then drag it to the desktop (or wherever you want)
