I have just downloaded and installed Fedora and I have never used this before. I have used Windows for years and am having some probles installing things in Linux. Everything I download has a .tax.gz extention on it I am assuming that this is a winrar extention so I downlaoded winrar which also has a .tar.gz extention how do I install these or open them up?

These are compressed files called tarballs. It contains files that are packed into one file and given the extension of .tar. That file is then zipped with the linux version of of ZIP called gzip. You can unpack and unzip a tarball in one step with the following command:

tar -zxvf filename.tar.gz

Tar will also accept wildcards like *.gz

You should already have tar, gzip and gunzip installed. By the way, since you have fedora, you may want to download the rpm version whenever available. RPM is a package management system that will make life a whole lot easier on people who are not used to compiling software themselves.
