I have heard many things so far. One being that CCNP is being retired in a few years and other rumors that CCIP was just added and that exams have been changed for CCNP. My question is this......
1) Is the CCNP being retired?
2) What are the best study materials for the new 640-901 exam?

I cannot find too much information on IS-IS protocol....

Thanks a million

for IS-IS information try in cisco web: isis <-- key search

Certifications:
CCNA, BSCI, MCP

In Progress:
CCNP - Remote Access

I haven't heard anything about the CCNP being retired, but I am steering my guys towards the CCIP cert instead. The primary difference in the (current) core CCIP curriculum is the BSCI which replaces the BSCN. I had already plunked down the exam fee with Prometric for the BSCN and had studied my BSCN study material when I heard about the new exam, so I went ahead and followed that out. When my CCNP comes up for recert, I am planning to take the CCIP exam instead. The main difference between the CCNP and the CCIP is the IS-IS section. There are several options for the CCIP, but we are looking at the Security option, which will also earn the CSS1 certification. It is the longest path, but Security is a growth industry right now and for the foreseeable future.

Good luck in your endeavors.

CCIP is geared towards the ISP/carrier market (hence the focus on QoS, MPLS, multicast, etc). It only shares the routing exam (BSCI that is, BSCN has been retired) with the CCNP cert. So they are totally different tracks and really have little to do with one another. CCNP is still geared towards supporing enterprise networks and will be around probably as long as Cisco is.
