Hi

I have been asked to come up with a project plan to implenemt an IT system for decision Support.
I have to come up with the plan for the next 2 years, resources I will need - financial, people etc. Milestones -both long term and short term. How to manage stakeholders.

Can you share your thoughts, any resources that I should consult?

Thanks

Adelman's "Data Warehouse PRoject Management" and "Impossible Data Warehouse Situations" are very good, even if you are not going to build a DW, but some other sort of Decision Support data store.

I would plan the project in phases, with each phase 3-6 months long. Do not commit to very much in the latter phases as there will be lessons learned in the earlier phases which will lengthen or shorten timelines in the latter phases. Adelman's books along with your business requirements will help you determine what belongs in which phase.

Available for short and long term data warehousing consulting and contracts.

Can you provide the sequence of milestones that happens from the time a tool is choosen to the time it is fully deployed in production?

It will vary depending on your environment, for instance, how long do things take to get through purchasing, will you install the BI tool yourself or have the vendor do it. Check Adelman's book on Data Warehousing Project Management. Your local library might eve have it.

Planning Large Projects

just a few pointers for you:

* see the big picture, then break things downs
* make it manageable
* keep it realistic
* ask
* use resources wisely
* SIMPLICITY is a good thing
* There's an overdependence on software, books, tech to do what people are trained and learn to do through life- M-A-N-A-G-E
* Navigate through politics, don't CUT your way through
* Plan to plan then do it, don't procrastinate
* of course you will take risks

Happy Planning
