Planning 8.3 Backup Strategy Question

Hi Folks,

I'm very new to cognos having recently inherited a planning 8.3 application. At the minute there is no backup strategy in place. We had a consultant in for a couple of days to install and configure a disaster recovery environment for us. The application and data was copied across using the deployment functionality. I'm comfortable with that now and have done a few test runs to copy the entire app from Production to DR. The consultant maintained that this was the prefered method of backup and recovery and that most clients use this.

I can't see how this could be the case because there are too many manual steps involved and I can't see how to automate it.

Searching this forum and looking at the backup and recovery guide the proper way seems to be roughly..
1. stop the services
2. copy all config files
3. copy analyst library files
4. copy databases
5. restart services

Can anyone advise? Is it the case that a deployment can be imported onto any server but the method above can only be restored back onto the server that it was taken from??

I'm still a bit confused.

btw - we're using sql server.

many thanks.
