placing images in illustrator

how can one place multiple images on an illustrator page at once, rather than having to return to the "place" dialogue box over and over again?

I don't believe you can, unless you can assemble them elsewhere before you bring them in. Most users would need to size and position each image separately anyway, so Adobe probably ignored the possibility for batch import.

you can click and drag multiple files from a folder but they will be embeded.
