When I try to place illustrator files into a pagemaker publication, I get a message stating: Don't know how to place filename.ai and then a list of file types is given below. However, it doesn't allow me to select ANY of these options (by the way, none of them include Illustrator 9.0) and continue.

If I export a file it will work but I'm not sure which format is best.

Can you help?

Hi,

Illustrator files are best saved as eps-files. You can place these files in your pagemaker

If you have the time and money, I suggest migrating to InDesign. It is far more powerful.
