when i save scanned images in an eps format in photoshop they look fine with color intact. but when i place the same images in pagemaker they are grainy black and white images. when i save the images in jpeg format and place in pagemaker, the image and color is fine. it doesn't seem like pagemaker can read the eps images. anyone else have the same problem?

Hi, tellin,

EPS files will print perfectly from PM to a postscript printer.

What you seen on the screen is a preview, and in some cases there isn't one or it is the absolute minimum.

If you don't have an actual Postscript printer, generate a PDF from PM instead.

InDesign handles EPS much better.

thank you for your reply, John. i still have some major holes in my knowledge which i hope you can fill. why can i open eps files in other programs (photoshop)and they look fine. they print fine (i don't have a postscript printer). it is when i place the files in pagemaker they look terrible. and how does this relate to my printer when i'm not printing. i'm just viewing? i didn't have this problem when i used pagemaker on a mac. but now i'm on a windows platform. does this make a difference?
and...how do you generate pdf in pagemaker without a postscript printer? i just don't get this postscript stuff. i would so appreciate some answers!!! Thanks again,

Hi, tellin,

> why can i open eps files in other programs (photoshop)and they look fine. they print fine

PhS is an image editor; PM is page layout.

Image PM as a blank piece of paper on the table onto which you can stick pictures from a magazine. The magazine is the source of the pictures, not the layout on the table.

EPS files are already in Postscript code, ready for printing to a postscript printer. Im Pagemaker they require an additional "preview" to be viewed on the screen. If the original EPS files was created without a preview, the latest PM import filter has an option to create one. A high quality preview will seriously increase the filesize and can slow down the screen refresh.

To view all images in high resolution, hit Ctrl+Shift+F12.

You don't need to have an actual postscript printer present and attached; you just need the driver.

You don't say which versions of PM and Windows you are using, but my tutorial - - was written for PM7 and Win2K. It is not that different for PM6.52 and WinXP or Win98.

You should find just about everything you need to know there.

PageMaker, despite being very old and at the end of its life, has always been optimized to work in the Postscript environment, and produce publications at resolutions much much higher that the average home or office printer.

See this page in the PM Knowledgebase:
Limitations of Printing from PageMaker to a Non-PostScript Printer

> i save scanned images in an eps format in photoshop

The preferred format for scanned images is usually TIFF. And you'll have no problem seeing them in PM!

Tip: do all your image editing in PhS. Ideally, you should just place the image into PM - any cropping, re-sizing, rotating &c will alreadt have been done.
