Thanks to Eugene for previous answer. But the problem remains!
I place text from a Word or TextEdit file, into an existing ID frame or dragging out a new one. I get the first couple of lines, the rest disappears down the overflow port and I can't get it back. The same happens if I copy the Word file and paste it into ID. And (as in my previous post) the same also happens if I apply a paragraph style. I'm struggling to finish a magazine layout, and I can't get the text in! Where's it going, and why?

Seems like you need more pages. Hold down the shift key when you're placing the text.

All a frame is is a container for your text. When the container isn't big enough then the text frame overflows.

There are a number of reasons why a text frame would overflow when you apply a style.

Number one reason I found was that tabs have not been properly set up.

And number two reason I found was that the in the Paragraph Panel Fly Out Menu, there is the Adobe Paragraph Composer and the Adobe Line Composer. I would use the Adobe Paragraph Composer.

So put your cursor into the text box, select all, and turn on the Paragraph Composer and see if that helps.

Thanks Eugene – but still the same. Tried Line Composer and Para Composer: all that's placed is the first 2 lines, leaving an otherwise blank frame and an outport showing overflowed text. I've checked the various Word and TextEdit files I've been trying to import, and can't find any mysterious tags. So the problem isn't that the frame is full (I know about shift-clicking with loaded cursor). I'm baffled.

Make sure that your "No Break" in the character panel is turned off, before or after placing text. Select all in your text box and change the No Break to off.
