PJL codes: Can't get FORMLINES cmd to work

Trying to set the number of lines per page. Sending this:
<Esc>%-12345X@PJL DEFAULT FORMLINES=66<CR>
<Esc>%-12345X
No effect.

Questions:
1. This might be a stupid question but I've never had to send PJL codes to the printer before. Can you send the job to the printer across the network or must you be directly connected to the printer?
2. Does the command syntax look correct, and how would I tell if it wasn't?
