Hey guys-

I've got a cisco 515e, a 1700 router and 4 2950 switches.. What is the best implementation using the above equipment to install a Windows 2000 server. Should I plug it into my 2950 racked switches? Or is it best to plug into the 1700 router and let that device route to tru the switches? OR could I just let the PIX route traffic to the server and take it from there? confused abit.

The lay out

Internet (T1)
|
1700 router (light path)
|
PIX 515E
|
2600 router (192.168.1.1)
|
2950 switch

Based on this (hope its clear) where should my server initially adapt to this scenario?

Thanks everyone, seasons greetings to all!!!!

What is your 2000 server used for? The above topology looks fine for most purposes.

It will be a domain controller, Active Directory and perhaps run SQL on it. Where should this device be initially plugged in using the diag above?

HI.

In that case the server should be plugged to the switch or to the 2600 router.

If all the switches are on the same subnet with no VLAN then you simply connect the server to a 2950 switch.

If you are using VLAN, or if the 2600 router is connecting more then 1 switch on different interfaces, then you might need to connect the server to the router, but in such a case it is better to use a Layer3 switch to be the "main" switch/router instead of a slower device like 2600.

Please describe the switching configuration.

Yes of course, there are 4 switches, each 2950 switch acts as a different VLAN and all but one of the 4 will be on the same subnet.. What do you think?

HI.

I have not much experience with VLAN, but as far as I know each VLAN should be on a different ip subnet. Isn't it so?

> What do you think?
I think that such a configuration needs to be designed by an experienced expert person since any misconfiguration can lead to major problems or performance lost.
Don't substitue that need (for expert design) with answers you get on this or other forum, since no matter how much details you provide we can not see the whole picture in your case.

Anyway, if one switch will act as the concentrator (the "main" or "top" switch/router), the server should be connected to this one.

You should also plan for growth, for example additional servers.

You were correct about each vlan being in a different subnet, there is though a top switch in the rack which acts as a manager, I'll plug the server into te switch. thank you , you've been am immense help!
