PIX 'PDM' - Syslog Viewer

I'm interested in managing the logs off our pix firewall. we have the 6.01 version and supposedly PDM is installed and ready to go. my questions is, do you set up the pix to log to a syslog server, and then point to PDM to the server? or do your logs have to sit on your firewall for you to view them with the PDM? i need more info on how the PDM app works. currently our pix logs to a server and we view the logs via some freeware log viewing software. does anyone have any suggestions on good log viewing software?
