I have a brand new Pix 506 and would rather not mess with command-line config.

Has anyone had experience with Cisco's configuration software? Does it work?

They packed version 4.2 with the unit. I can't find word one on Cisco's web site about a newer version. Is there one?

Thanks!

If you haven't done so already I would recommend purchasing their support package for the PIX506. In it you can register for a CCO and have access to the latest software cisco has to offer. Do you know if this PIX has version 6.1 or later? If so you can run a command to automatically configure your pix with a series of prompts.

Connect to your pix via the console port and enter your enable password (no password by default). You should get a pound sign (#) prompt. From there type configure terminal and then the # should change to config# I think. After this type setup and follow the prompts. It configures your PIX506. The last prompt is to write the data to the flash and choose yes, reload the PIX and you are on your way.

I can help you out in more detail if you need. Let me know.

HI.

Your pix is NOT a brand new one.
New pix 506 should be shipped with version 6.x.
You should contact the seller of the pix for a replacement or for a free upgrade to latest version.
(A replacement is better - you might have problems if you only upgrade the software, see below).

You should also check the hardware version using the serial number, and verify that this is not a defective box from the following list:

For GUI configuration, you can use PDM (for version 6.x).

Just because a PIX is new does not mean it comes with 6.x or highter. We purchased our PIX last year and to my amazement my IOS was 3 versions behind what Cisco had released. It takes less than 5 minutes to upgrade the IOS of the PIX if done properly. I don't think returning it is the answer.
