PIX/ASA VPN spoke-to-spoke NEED HELP ASAP!!

Scenario: I have 2 PIXes (PIX1 and PIX2) at remote sites each connected with a site-to-site VPN to the central ASA (ASA1). I can ping to and from the ASA1 from either site but I can't ping from one remote site to the other remote site (PIX1 to PIX2).
PIX1 Internet traffic goes through ASA1 thru the VPN to PIX1.
Internet traffic for PIX2 is through it's gateway.

I'm using the "Enhanced Spoke-to-Spoke config" example to assist me but I still can't get it to work:


In reference to the above document:
I’m using site-to-site VPNs between the Hub (ASA1) and spokes (PIX1 and PIX2).

Are my access-lists an issue? should I have more routes (in the example config, only the single default route exists)?

Your ACL's on the spokes need to encrypt and nat_exempt the traffic to the end spoke.

Wouldn't the above be be covered off on the 'any' part on the PIX2 acls?

Also, when making changes, once I enter the command, the changes should be in effect immediately? correct? I was doing some changes earlier, the expected result did not happen even though the config showed that it should, I came back 20 min later and the PIX was acting as expected...any thoughts?
 
Also, if I'm going in the right direction, are there any changes needed to be made on the ASA1?
 
The ACL's for no_NAT and interesting traffic must be mirror images of the receiving end pix. If the pix sees traffic that (by it's ACLs) should be encrypted and it isn't, the traffic gets dropped.
The ACLs on pix2 should work, but you want to spell it out for troubleshooting and best practive.

For any VPN work, you want to disable isakmp, "clear xlate", and then "isakmp enable outside" on the interface and that gets it up and going then.

From what I can see, PIX2 and PIX3 have mirror images of ACLs, like you suggested.

Don't try to ping from pix to pix. That traffic does not get encrypted. Ping from internal host to internal host.

Yeah, I've been pinging from an internal host

Now after putting those in, I get 3 IPSEC tunnels showing but only 1 IKE Tunnel on PIX2 and ASA1 (central).
Only 1 IKE Tunnel and 1 IPSEC tunnel are showing at PIX3. Tracert to 10.100.102.XX goes to external gateway, throug ISP, etc. but never reaches destination. Pings don't work either.
Successful Tracert to 172.17.16.XX gives only one hop.

Are the ASA1 ACLs ok?

 
On the ASA, I still get the 305005 error when I ping from either host to the opposite spoke.

I was able to get support from Cisco on this and was finally able to get it working last week.
It took even the Cisco TAC Engineer a few tries to figure it out. He actually did the configurations himself. The main changes that were preventing communication are in bold.

mingtmak, I have a similar network and currently testing this and I havent used nat(outside) commands. can you please explain why should we use below commands and do we require related global commands?

yeah, that's right, the 103.0 network is another pix, which behaves similar to the 101.0 network, therefore virtually identical.

nat (Outside) 10 10.100.101.0 255.255.255.0
nat (Outside) 10 10.100.103.0 255.255.255.0

These allow the NATing to occur at the central ASA instead of nating occuring at each of the spoke PIXes (10.100.101.0 and 10.100.103.0 networks). In other words, the internet traffic goes from the central ASA (where it's NAT'ed), through the tunnel, then to the hosts on the 101.0/103.0 networks.

nat (Outside) 0 access-list spoke_to_spoke

is needed so that traffic between the three networks are not nat'd. The access-list "spoke-to-spoke" allows the communication between the different networks. At least for the way I've set it.
Like I mentioned before, the "spoke_to_spoke" acls might be redudant and I might have been able to use the line below and remove the "spoke_to_spoke" acls:

nat (Outside) 0 access-list Inside_nat0_outbound

But I left them since that's what the Cisco TAC engineer did.

If you still need help and still want to see my full configs/network diagram, I'll try to post them Monday or tuesday.

mingtmak, thanks for your response. I almost understood your config. I am a bit confused when I see relate to the config from Cisco website you have mentioned.


In this same acl is created for hub & spokes to communicate,
"access-list 100 extended permit ip 10.10.10.0 255.255.255.0 10.30.30.0 255.255.255.0" (pix1 & pix2)
"access-list 100 extended permit ip 10.20.20.0 255.255.255.0 10.30.30.0 255.255.255.0" (pix2 & pix3)
and this is allowed under "crypto map mymap 10 match address 100".

I am not sure if I understood right.

I am still waiting for some requirements and so didnt finished the configs yet. It would be great if you can put your configs and network and so I can compare with mine when I am done.

mingtmak, I believe you have a router after the ASA connecting into the internet right? If so, does it have the basic config and allowing all traffic coming from the firewall?
 
No there's no router. The test setup had hosts connected to the inside interfaces for testing purposes.
