PIX alike Firewall

Is there any software based firewall that uses the same commands and functions like PIX? Is it possible to install a PIX software image on a ordinary computer?

I don't know of anything that works with the same instruction set. However I have heard that someone was able to take the PIX software and run it on a Pentium PC.?? Although I don't remember the source so consider it a rumor!

I would consider the purchase of a PIX 501...it is less than 500 bucks and runs full 6.1 level OS with two ethernet interfaces.

Also, I have played with both software and hardware router/firewall solutions and find that hardware is faster when it comes to the initial connection. Once the connection is established, I see know difference.

Example, I find browsing web pages is slower on a software based solution but downloading a piece of software there is no difference.

The *FrankenPIX* is not a rumor but by the time you get the parts AND the Cisco ONLY flash card, you could have bought TWO 501s which are priced for 400 bucks delivered. The only real bennie to a FrankenPIX is that you get multiple NICs.
