I'm running a PIX 515 with the 4.4(4) OS. I'd like to upgrade it to 6.x. The show version command doesn't show the amount of flash I have, so that I can verify it meets the min. requirements (8Mb flash, 32Mb RAM). Also, I'd like to backup the OS and startup-config file, but there is no 'copy' command. It looks like I have to use the 'write' command, but I'm unsure of the syntax...

PIX# write ?
usage: write erase|floppy|mem|terminal|standby
write net [<tftp_ip>]:<filename>

Where do I find the name of the startup-config file and of the OS its running so that I can back it up to a TFTP server.

PIX# show version

You have 16M flash. If you perform a show version command on your PIX, and the flash size is not given in MB, then use the table below to see how much flash your PIX has.

i28F020 - 512 KB
AT29C040A - 2 MB
atmel - 2 MB
i28F640J5 - 8 MB - PIX 506, 16 MB - all other PIXes
strata - 16 MB

To get the old pix software you will have to do a pix downgrade. See URL:

Thanks for the info on the flash.

Why would I want to do a downgrade? I want to upgrade to 6.x. What is the command to copy the old IOS image and startup-config file to a TFTP server, and then copy the new 6x image to the PIX via TFTP? I know its "write" something. With Cisco routers, you simply do "copy flash:image tftp", but there is no copy command with the PIX running 4.4.

The PIX is a different beast. I am assuming you want to copy the PIX software incase something doesn't work and you want to restore 4.4. You have to downgrade the image you can't just restore the image.

There isn't a copy for the image just the config. Not sure why Cisco did that.

Just download 4.4 when you download 6.x.

Thanks, whats the command to backup the config to TFTP?

Chris

...nevermind, got it...

write net server_ip:filename
