I am pretty knowledgeable about routers and security and have ordered a PIX 506 E for a customer. I expected that it would come with a "getting started" guide that explains how to set one up for the first time - but amidst all of the promotional documentation that Cisco sent there was no such document - does anyone know if a getting started guide for the PIX 506E exists - If not can someone at least point me in the right direction - It is brand new and should have Ver 6.02 IOS - Cisco Device Manager should be installed from the factory. Will I need to tftp the license or is it ready to fire up?
I'm new to the forum and appreciate any advice!

You need to enable int, assign ip addresses to inside and outside int, set deafault route for pix, enable NAT or PAT if requied and assign global address for local clients. This is basic, with that config you can go out to the internet. If you have local servers use static command to assign public ips, open the necessary ports and enable logging.

HI.

For new pix and new buyer - I suggest using the PDM.
Make sure you have at least version 6.21 of PIX OS, and version 2.xx of PDM.

First connect a serial console and follow the on screen prompts for date/time/inside ip address/administrator workstation ip address etc,
then connect to PDM using a crossover cable from your workstation to the pix inside interface and running:
(Note the httpS !)
And follow the PDM setup prompts.

You should practice and learn about the pix before implementation - your routers experience will help you but is not enough. Some lab practice and documentation reading is needed.
Here are some sources for info:

And the PDM help can also assist you with some options.
