PIX 506 & out-of-band management question

Does anyone have any experience with placing a modem on the console port of a Cisco PIX 506 for out-of-band management? I have made a 10 year old ATI 9600 baud modem work, but I have not been able to make today's modems work. What I mean by "today's modems" is any modem that I can purchase new today. I have compared init strings by comparing vendor's documentation and still no luck.
