I have a PIX 501 out of the box that won't pull dhcp from my cable modem. My understanding is that it should do so with it's default config. I know for sure that my cable modem is providing dhcp, and that it's not based on hostname because I switch back and forth between my home pc and work laptop all of the time. Any help would be greatly appreciated here!

Post the config from your PIX, we can take a look at it and see what is wrong....

Have you consoled into the PIX and made sure the port is up? Mine was adminstratively down when I unboxed it. I have seen it where the vendor blocks mac addresses for DHCP by vendor code. In other words, if the mac pops up as a cisco device, the DHCP server will not serve out an IP. Stupid but true. Some nonsense about putting LANs on the connection and if you want that, then get a commercial account or buy more IPs at some outragous amount.

Yeah, I can see stupid ISP's doing that, they'll do anything for a buck(or lots at the prices they charge)... I just got my PIX a couple days ago, and it was up and running for me, but who knows....

A little off topic, but Mike, how do you enable logging on a PIX 501 or 506, and what command do you use to show it on the console instead of setting up a syslog server? Thanks for the help...

ciscokidjt,
let us know what happens or send us a config...

Turns out we had to enter a dhcp setroute command on the outside interface to get it to pull dhcp. Once it did that we were all set. thanks for the responses!

Good, glad to here it is back up.

Mike, nevermind about the question....I'm stupid.... [neutral]

No problem burke.. brain-farts are allowed :)

Glad to hear about the DHCP resolution. It's always nice when it's something simple.
