Pivot chart formatting

I have just produced a pivot chart in excel but I wanted the series in a different order and so I right clicked on the series and selected format data series and changed the series order by moving up and down. The problem is that when I then make selections on the pivot chart, the formatting changes. I have made sure the checkbox 'preserve formatting' is ticked within the options of the pivot chart. Why won't the chart keep the settings I gave it!
