If I were to send a hi-res PDF to a commercial printing press, would it be OK for the document that it was generated from to have had True Type fotns in it, or would this cause the usual sorts of problems associated with true type fonts?

Does the embedding overcome these issues?

There's nothing wrong with using TT fonts as long as they are from a reputable company and not some freebie download.

Embedding does take care of most of the issues you mention.

Adobe will embed the font - use it for printing of the document - and not cause issues . . .

Unless the document is altered. If the person altering the PDF does not have a licensed copy of the font you embedded loaded on the machine doing the editing then font substitution can occur.
