Is there anyway to specify the number of pings that are sent out to a host?
 
Just type "ping" without anything else... you'll be prompted to enter more specific information
 
yeah, do whats called an "extended ping". you can configure the ping specs including the size of the packets which is very useful when doing MTU configuration and testing.

Just want to add some more. In case, you ping from the command promp. Use ping -n [x], when you want to ping x packets. Ping and enter, you will find many options that you can do.
