My manager administrates the AS/400 system here and I handle the windows machines. He is trying to setup a connection to the AS/400 machine using the computer name. If he pings the computer name "as4001" it tries to ping that computer but it uses the IP address from a previous network config. Instead of pinging 153.10.x.x it looks for 38.76.x.x and times out. If I ping the name "as4001" I get a response from the correct IP address 153.10.x.x. I believe it must be a static setting somewhere but I cannot find it. His pc is running XP Pro and it is up to date. I have checked his IP settings as far as WINS and DNS and thye are all correct. Any ideas?

Look in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc

Use notepad to edit the HOSTS file to remove the erronous entry.

It is also possible that there is an entry in either the local copy of LMHOST, or a bad entry in the WINS database (if used), but this seem the least likely scenario.

Thanks a bunch bcastner. the HOSTS file edit did the trick. I gave you a star. This has been pestering us for a long time.
