since there are very few sensible reasons for it, it is not a process anyone automates. I have written scripts in C shell to save all my entries in the hosts file which do not respond to ping, as a part of my conversion to DHCP. Well i have time clocks that pull an IP address. When one of those time clocks has problems, i need to be able to see which IP address cannot be pinged. If i can ping a range of IP addresses ie. ping {132.43.22.13, 132.43.22.200} i can find out which time clock has the problem.
Unix allows you to ping a range of IP addresses. (or at least HP-UX) Windows not as far as I am aware. You will have to write a little script as said by the 1st reply or find a little program which can do it for you.
