Anyone know why I could ping my DC's name and not it's IP address???

Im going to assume you are using W2K server or at least W2K.
Primarily I would say due to the built in LDAP. What this does is replace the LMHOST files of old. In doing so an address is resolved either by IP or assigned Name. This is one of the features that makes W2k so attractive for video conferencing suites.

Don't know the awnser, but you can ping just about anything out there. I can ping microsoft.com and get a time out, but it comes back with an ip address. I had problems getting to hp's website for a while, so I pinged hp.com, then put the ip address in the browser and got there with no problem. Take a scientific calculator, convert IP address into binary, put that in a browser window, it'll get you there also. Kinda nifty. Glen A. Johnson
