Hi all,

I have to configure a small network. There are 12 computers. All these computers can connect to the internet and they getting their ip-addresses from my router. I can see all the computers in my neigbourhood, except one. This computer runs with winXP. all the others have win98SE. Every computer has TCP/IP and the windows 98SE computers also have NetBeui. In winXP I didn't find Netbeui. I can ping from the computer with winXP to all the other computers, but I can't ping from any computer with windows98SE to this winXP computer? How can I solve this terrible problem? It's really important because I need to share the printer.

IP-addresses: 10.0.0.X
subnetmask: 255.0.0.224 (on all the computers the same)
workgroup: bassisschool (on all the computers the same)

plz help me...
thanks in advance.

It sounds like you might have windows XP's built in firewall on.

Right-click "My Network Places" (or whatever it's called) and choose "Properties". Hightlight the TCP/IP and right-click it and choose "Properties" as well.

Take a look around and make sure that the "Protect my computer while online...." (or something like that) is not checked. That's XPs built in firewall and it might be your problem. ====================================

I allready did that, but this wasn't the solution for my problem. many thanks to react mithrillhall

Anyone else who can help me?

thanks in advance

yes bfjacobs is exactly right...just install netbeui from yoru xp cd and you should be fine....also take into consideration I hope you formatted xp using FAT32 file system since that's all you can get from 98....do not make it NTFS or you will have more problems.

FROGGYJ,

Just as a point of information, the file system used has NO BEARING on what you are able to share. XP and NT machines formatted with NTFS CAN share files with Win9x machines formatted with FAT, FAT16 or FAT32.

kvoguy,

If you load NetBEUI on the XP machine, make sure all the machines are using the same default protocol or you will continue to have issues. See the link.

Good luck.
