Having a problem when I try to ping a non-existent IP on my windows 2003 server also running ISA 2000.

Server Details:

LAN IP = 192.168.203.*
NET NIC = 10.0.0.2 > ROUTER TO INTERNET = 10.0.0.1

If I try to ping a non-existent IP e.g. 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.204.1 I get the following response:

Reply from 10.0.0.1: Destination port unreachable.

I can ping any website on the internet and it works perfectly.

If I disable the NET NIC, the ping then starts replying normally with a time-out.

Can anyone tell me where I’m going wrong?

Thanks in advance!

what is the subnet mask on your lan ip?

192.168.203.* net ID

192.168.0.*
192.168.204.*

the ip you try to ping is not on the same network as your LAN IP... so it is passing it to its default gateway, the router

The subnet mask of the LAN is 192.168.203.* 255.255.255.0

192.168.0.* and 192.168.203.* do not exist on the network and therefore should time-out when pinged but why are they being routed outside the LAN if they are on a private address range?

I have another windows 2003 server and it works perfectly. When I try to ping a non-existent IP address, it responds with a time-out and does not forward it to the default gateway but I can't see any settings that are different.

Thanks again for any advice

i do admit it is strange...

check the route tables on your pc and the router...
see if they have an entry for these subnets.

are you using ICS?? because 192.168.0.1 is the default IP for a NIC
