Here's the deal,

I have two machines on the same network with the same mask and gateway. Both machines can ping all machines on the network and both can access the internet. However, one machine wrkstn1 can ping wrkstn2, but wrkstn2 cannot ping wrkstn1. Both machines have the exact same network settings except for the IP. Wrkstn2 cannot ping wrkstn1's IP or name. Wrkstn1 can ping wrkstn2's IP and name.

Any ideas?

Either it's Vista, or the NIC card is messed up, or the drivers. Try uninstalling/reinstalling the drivers. For ping to work, it needs a return path, so if one pings the other, then there's no routing issue, since they use the same gateway, and since they're on the same subnet, they don't even need the router---just the switch.

Windows firewall on wrkstn1?

Windows Firewall not on stn1.

XP on both machines.

Should I check the NIC/drivers on stn1 or stn2? I've been having some issues with stn1 lately, but it sounds like this problem may originate from stn2.

As a reminder (and clarification), stn1 can ping stn2, but stn2 cannot ping stn1.

Can any other device ping either workstation? It sounds to me like W1 just isn't replying to ICMP.

Swap NIC cards between the two and see if the problem follows the NIC card, or let us know if anything else can ping ws1, like Lawn says.

I tested to see if other machines could ping stn1 (in a normal work environment there is no need for them to connect). No machine could ping it. Obviously the problem lies with stn1.

As I mentioned in one of my previous posts, I've been having some problems with stn1 recently. Just a few days ago I installed SP3. I thought this problem was a continuation of the ones I'd been having previously. Only this morning did I realize SP3 turned Windows Firewall on.

Checking back at the machine sure enough it was on. I adjusted the settings now my ping issues are straight.

Thanks for your help guys.
