When I ping a computer name I get an IP return but when I nbtstat the IP I get a different computer name. When I ping the name that nbtstat returned i get the same IP. I have confirmed that the first name pinged is not on the network. Suggestions please.
This sounds like a DNS vs Wins issue. When you ping your first name, you get a DNS resolution. When you do your nbtstat, you get a WINS resolution. One does not talk to the other to maintain their databases. When you ping the new name, you probably get a WINS resolution, which is why it works.
See if your DNS database has the first name in there. If you don't have DNS database access, do a nslookup or remove the DNS settings of your TCPIP properties and try again.
ZEN37 - Thanks for the tip. It led us to investigate further as we had many instances of this issue. As it turns out the issue was only occuring with laptop users that travel from site to site. I am not sure of all the details but it has to do with them picking up different ips and 7 day caching of dns entry. Network group is working on this. Many thanks.
