I am running Solaris 2.6 on an Ultra 10 server.
I have just added 2 new IP addresses and associated hostnames to the /etc/hosts file.
If I ping the server from one of these new hosts, all is well. However, if I try to rlogin or telnet the server it will not connect.
Also pinging from server to new host works fine.

Totally baffled and don't know where to go.

Can anyone help please.

On the server does telnet localhost allow you to login? If not check that telnet is enabled in etc/inet/inetd.conf (i.e. entry for telnetd is not commented out).

My server is called maxwell. The machine I am trying to connect with is called earith.
Do you mean on the server 'telnet earith' ?

localhost is the "name" of your local host.... No matter what you called it.... You should be able to telnet to either name....

From the server I can telnet into the OS (by the way it isSunOS 5.6 not Solaris 2.6)

To clarify a couple of things, are you saying:
- The server you are trying to telnet FROM is maxwell and is running Solaris 2.6 on an Ultra 10 server?
- And the server you are trying to telnet TO is earith?

If this is the case the issue is probably with the server earith not maxwell. Can you login to earith another way and maintain it?

BTW: You were right the first time, SunOS 5.6 is part of Solaris 2.6. Solaris consists SunOS and various other applications.

So you have..

earith (Some Client) ---------> maxwell (Solaris)

Ping maxwell (OK) PING Earith (OK)
Telnet Maxwell (Fails) Telnet localhost (OK)
