Here's my problem. It all seemed to start after removing TCP/IP and re-installing. The computer is a Dell laptop running W2k.

I can ping addresses on the LAN and I can connect to network shares. The McAfee virus update even runs across the network.

I cannot run applications across the network. For example, an app that tries to connect to sql server. I cannot connect to the internet with IE (cannot find server msg).

Any help will be appreciated.....

Thanks

Remove all protocols including NetBeui if its installed. Pinging and network shares can be done over NetBeui, whereas you will need tcp funtionality for the internet and possible your sql driven apps. Try reinstalling TCP/IP. See if you can ping your loop back address (127.0.0.1). Try playing around with TCP options like WINS, DNS, and if you have one available to you, grab your IP config from a DHCP server. Hope this helps.

rshendrix,

What connectivity tools are you using to connect with the SQL server? ODBC? Net connect? Many maintain logs that may shed some light on why you are not connecting. If ODBC, open the ODBC control panel and use the button to test the connection.

Ping is an ICMP tool that uses TCP/IP. If you can ping network devices, your TCP/IP connectivity is OK.

NetBEUI/NetBIOS is part of a suite of protocols that was originally used for IBM LAN Manager but picked up by Microsoft for communication on a LAN. Microsoft uses it primarily for file sharing and name resolution. It uses the MAC address as part of the ID and does not recognize IP addresses so can not be used for pinging and is not routable. More recent implementations of TCP/IP [Win2K, XP] include NetBIOS functionality. So, bottom line, if you are running Win2K, you should not need NetBEUI unless an application is specifically using it.

Try the suggestions JeremyUTSI made. Ping your loopback (127.0.0.1), ping localhost and ping other devices to ensure your TCP/IP is working. THen check your ODBC.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I finally had to reinstall Windows 2000 to get everything back working.

Thanks again...
