I've read that "ping 224.0.0.1" can be used to ping all the nodes on a segment. I tried this on a small network with 5 network devices connected to a hub.

I did get a response but I'm not sure which node was responding (I wasn't running a packet sniffer at the time). However, I was expecting ALL the nodes to respond. Have I misunderstood how this command works with this address? Does this only work on Linux networks (I saw an example of output from this command but it looked like the command was typed at a Linux prompt)?

ya probably need to have a swich in place and configured to support and forward multicasts, as this is a multicast network address.

And your nodes probably needs to support multicast as well.
