Pictures enormous in Word

Hello all, I have noticed that if I insert a scanned image into Word (97 or 2000) the size of the document increases by several MB. EG 2 x JPG files, 28 KB and 128 KB respectively, combine to create a Word file of over 7 MB even when there is no other text in the document. If I use MS Photo Editor to reduce the resolution to 500 pixles/cms and save in gif format this brings the file size down to 2.5 MB but it still seems unnecessarily enormous. Any ideas?

Are you Inserting the picture from file or using Copy and Paste from MS Photo Editor?

If you are copy/Pasting try inserting from file and see difference Neil Berryman
