I have just cut and pasted an image into word it appears to be every page. When I try and select it I can not get any handles

Any ideas

Are you pasting it into the header or footer? This would cause the very problem you describe. It can be done accidently, as I've done it myself (no clue how I did it).
To check, select View>Header and Footer and see if the picture is there.

Whenever you can't "grab" a picture, make sure you're viewing the drawing toolbar and select the mouse-pointer-looking icon from it and THEN click on the picture. If your picture is "behind text" or anything like that, you'll be sure to be able to grab it using the selector tool from the drawing toolbar, as I've indicated.
