Picture field is now a String

We recently carried out a new install of Crystal Reports V10 which I thought was completed without incident. However I am now developing a report that contains person images. Prior to the install, I could select the image field and drop it into the report. When I try to do this now, I get a "Failed to Open Rowset" and then Query Engine Error: 'Cannot obtain message from server.'

If I display image type, it now lists the Image field as a String [4000]. Prior to the install, the field was a Picture.

I would really appreciate it, if someone could explain what I need to do to get these images displaying correctly.
