picture being compressed

I am a total newbie at Gimp. I am trying to save a picture of a string of beads for my website i am working on. When I upload the picture into the oscommerce software the picture gets compressed horizontally, so the line of beads lokks like a sideways stack of pennies. Anyone know what I am doing wrong or how to avoid this? I have tried changing the size of the original but have not been successful at avoiding the problem.

Make sure that the image tag in the html doesn't specify a width or height (whichever is getting squashed), or that if they are used they contain the correct values.
