Physical move of pseries servers 1

Hi

I have a high-level question so am only seeking a high-level response

Basically we have to move to a new building. We have a power7(p750) and a power6(p550). We're contemplating migrating both to a power770 but regardless of that idea, we're wondering what the best approach to the move would be. We're thinking, build the target pseries server (or servers), build lpars and network config etc and then migrate data using SAN replication tools. If this sounds like a logical approach, is there a quick and easy way of 'copying' the configuration (e.g. network config) from one pseries to another ? Or is it all a manual procedure to build from scratch on the target?

Why don't you migrate by cloning the systems? You do have mksysb's of your systems I presume?

Mksysb's yes. But san replication could be much handier especially when it comes to the big switch over. What we're really interested in is how to copy the network config. SEA/Lhea settings etc. Is there a quick way to do this or is it manual? Mksysb can't help us there. Thanks.

Probably the quickest way, if your code is fairly up to date and if you have all virtual resources, would be live partition mobility.

There are a few problems in swinging rootvg on the SAN to new hardware.

The "old" ODM suddenly needs to bring in and configure a whole new system leaving all the old resources in a defined state!

Have a google for something like... aix san clone rootvg

Then have a long read about the associated problems, what is and is not supported, and then decide how best to proceed.

We migrated a lot of partitions from one piece of hardware to another one including location change via SAN replication. Duke is right about the "defined" devices, but you are able to delete them and clean it up. Also be aware of the fact that new networkinterfaces are defined during migration. Cleaning all the network interfaces and run configuration manager will do that job so you don't have to redefine your network configuration. We also migrated HACMP clusters this way. Every partition migrated OK. Depending on your SAN and other setup, like VIO-servers etc you should be able to do it this way.
Other way is partition mobility, but your environment needs to be ready for that.
