My understanding is that Win2003 Server Std is only able to use up to 4G RAM and 2 CPU's.

I am wondering if I am running VM Server in this environment and I have more that 4G of RAM, can I allocate the RAM above the 4G to a VM. I am assuming the Windows limit will the controlling factor and until I move to ESX or Win2003 Ent 4G is the max.??

Hope this makes sense to someone.

From what we have seen that is the limit until you move to the newer verion of ESX-Server. Then you can go to the 64 version of windows server,, and get more resources available.

The 4Gb limitation is within Windows itself. Just like in the physical world, if you give Windows 2003 STD 32GB RAM it will only see 4GB. So int he virtual world, you will get the same results. If you go to 64bit Windows 2003 STD, the support is for 32GB RAM. Almost every virtualization scenario I have run in the last 5 years, 1GB RAM is more than sufficient. If you have an application that uses a tremendous amount of RAm and/or CPU, the server may not be a good cndidate for virtualization.
