phpmyadmin setup

I am having some trouble setting up phpmyadmin. I have tried running the setup script and manually creating a config.inc.php file and nothing seems to work. This is the error I keep getting:

#1045 - Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO)

Can anyone help out?
I'm running apache 2.2 php 5.2 mysql 5.0 on windows xp pro

well ... you have not supplied a password for phpmyadmin to use for the root user
