PHP REMOTE_USER Variable not showing

from recollection it only works when you are using php as a sapi with apache. i.e. if you're on CGI or a non-apache platform then it might (will) not work.
since i see you're using apache, i'd guess it's a sapi-vs-cgi issue (unless of course the page is not protected!)
