I am fairly new (advanced beginner) to web design. I am familiar with HTML and have used (though not extensively) Javascript, Java, C++, & Visual Basic.

I am designing a website that will use a MySQL database and am looking for a good way to dynamically create web pages. I have heard a lot about PHP and Perl but nothing that I have found gives a good comparison between what each solution offers. My hosting company supports both. I am looking into learning one (or both) of them but don't know which is the best to start with.

If you're familiar with both, which is better? Which is your favorite? Or, am I trying to compare C++ to Javascript (apples to oranges)? Any help here would be great.

Thanks,
-Ron

I heard a Perl veteran say that PHP detrowned Perl for web and for good reasons. PHP was built fromt he grouinds up to be a web language.

You'll have less trouble with PHP than Perl. Perl is rather different than all other languages you mentionned in its logical structure. PHP ressembles more C/Javascript than Perl does.

I hope this helps. Gary Haran
